Stress Management-Online (18-PRFS-502) Sections 705 and 707

This is a concentrated 8-week, 3-quarter/2-semester credit hour, dual-level course (undergraduate/ graduate credit) that is offered online for students that want to learn more about managing stress, but are not able to take a traditional classroom course. This course should meet the requirements for a social science elective.

OfferedAutumn Quarter, Winter Quarter, and Spring Quarter.

Course Description

This concentrated, 8-week, online, dual-listed (undergraduate/graduate) course is designed to simulate a problem-solving approach to stress management..  Students will identify their own personal stressors and be introduced to specific intervention strategies.  They will be given the opportunity to practice and evaluate strategies to reduce their identified stress. In addition, the students will be examining stress theories concerning etiology, personality, and disease; stress patterns in work and other environments; and physical/mental responses associated with stress. This course would benefit any students that are interested in identifying and dealing with their own personal stressors or any students who plan on designing and/or administering stress management or health promotion programs in corporate, academic, hospital, or public health settings.

The course materials will be posted on the University of Cincinnati’s Blackboard (http://blackboard.uc.edu ).  : Once registered, the student must “activate his/her account” and register his/her working email address on Blackboard http://blackboard.uc.edu. Since the class never meets, this will be the major means of communication between professor and student.  

Textbook: Stress Management: A Comprehensive Guide to Wellness by E.A. Charlesworth & R.G. Nathan, Ballantine Publishers, 2004, (ISBN 0-345-46891-0) Cost: ~$15.95. The book may be purchased on the web through the University of Cincinnati Bookstore (http://www.uc.edu/bookstore/bktextbks.asp ) or in many bookstore chains. Supplementary materials, internet readings, and “mini-lectures” will also be provided on the website.

ProfessorDr. Walter S. Griesinger, Professor Emeritus of Psychology / Licensed Psychologist (Ohio) / Email: Walter.Griesinger@uc.edu

Dr. Griesinger had taught psychology at the University of Cincinnati for 30 years.  His primary areas of teaching were stress management and health psychology.  In 1999, he was awarded the University College’s Teaching Award. He was in private practice where he did psychotherapy with individuals with panic disorders, phobias, cancer, and other stress issues. He consulted at Deaconess Hospital in the Center for Sportsmedicine and Cardiovascular Fitness/Pain Center, where he did biofeedback therapy and psychotherapy with chronic pain patients. Other experiences: Ohio Licensed Peace Officer Instructor teaching at the Cincinnati Police Academy; stress workshops for corporations such as Cincinnati Milacron, Xomox, etc.; workshops, panels, or presentations in Singapore; China; Thailand; Indonesia; Southampton, England; Edinburgh, Scotland; Düsseldorf, Germany; Montreal; Banff; Halifax, Nova Scotia Canada; etc..
