GENERAL INFORMATION:

This project-based course may differ from many courses you may have taken in that the emphasis is, not only on content, but also on process, i.e. how the subject is approached. In this course you will focus on active learning and on development of critical thinking and communication skills. The assignments are geared to develop these skill areas.

Failure to show in the course for a period of two weeks or failure to show repeatedly without contacting Dr. G. in person will result in a "W" (withdrawal) if a withdrawal slip is signed before the deadline or an "F" if after the deadline or if no withdrawal slip at all, regardless of reason. 

COURSE DESCRIPTION AND OBJECTIVES

This course is designed to help students examine the entire field of stress management:  stress theories concerning etiology, personality, and disease; stress patterns in work and other environments; and the physical and mental responses associated with stress. In addition, students will be introduced to specific intervention strategies such as time management, exercise, relaxation training, diet management, and cognitive restructuring.

By combining a knowledge of research and theory on one hand, and practical application on the other, the course is designed to help the participant to understand the stress he/she experiences, recognize the sources of stress in self and others, and develop ways to control or reduce it. Students should be able to demonstrate the ability to use resources to locate and obtain relevant psychological materials and continue to develop written communication skills.

REQUIRED MATERIALS

A. Textbook-- Stress Management: A Comprehensive Guide to Wellness by E.A. Charlesworth and R.G. Nathan, Ballantine Books, 1984.

B. IPAT workbook--This workbook for the course will be an Individualized Stress Management Program (ISMP) developed by the Institute for Personality and Ability Testing (IPAT). This ISMP is based on the scores from two tests, the 16PF (a personality profile), and the SEI, which assesses the level of stress from various sources.

Completed data forms will be sent to IPAT for interpretation. IPAT will prepare an ISMP for each student, based on her/his profile. Information returned by IPAT will remain the personal and confidential property of the student during and after the course.

All students must turn in A MONEY ORDER for THIRTY-FIVE DOLLARS ($35.), made out to IPAT, Inc. before they may take the 16PF and the SEI. No cash or personal checks can be accepted. This sum covers the cost of the tests, interpretation and preparation of the individual program. MONEY ORDERS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED LATE, SINCE ALL MATERIALS ARE MAILED TOGETHER. Students should keep the carbon copy of the money order as a receipt. Money orders are available at banks, savings and loans, post office branches, and at some stores.

YOU WILL NOT BE AN OFFICIAL CLASS MEMBER UNTIL YOU HAVE PAID FOR AND TAKEN THE IPAT TEST ON THE DATES SET.

C. A Virtual Classroom account -- Dr. G's assignments, class schedule, etc. is located in "virtual" classroom on the internet.  You will be given directions for registering for this site.

D. An email account – You must maintain an email account throughout the quarter. You may register for free email accounts through U.C. Bearcat Online or a free web-based email such as “Hotmail.”  Instructions will be given in class on the registration process.

Course Requirements

See the Assignment Checklist and/or the Class Schedule and Assignments in the Virtual Classroom for specific assignments for this quarter and the points earned for each.

1. READINGS

The textbook for this course is Edward A. Charlesworth and Ronald G. Nathan's Stress Management: A Comprehensive Guide to Wellness, Ballantine Books.

A. Textbook Research and Essays (TRE) -- The textbook chapter material gives general concepts and topics focusing on understanding stress and stress management.

B. Stress Assignment Portfolio (SAP) -- (A Required Alternative) At the beginning of the quarter you will be asked what you want to learn in this stress course. If Dr. G. judges your response(s) to be both serious and thoughtful, you may use SAP to replace (an) appropriate required assignment(s).

The purpose of this exercise is to identify your learning goals, write reaction papers to various readings, and assess your learning progress.  You will demonstrate your ability to conduct a computerized psychological library search, evaluate your sources, and write a research paper with citations and a bibliography. This will help to develop your research, analytic, and evaluative skills. 

2. STRESS MANAGEMENT PROJECT (Required)-- The goal is for you to have a chance to analyze stressors in your life and to give you an opportunity to apply your new knowledge of stress management towards designing a program to deal with one of these stressors.

3. COMPUTER LEARNING ASSIGNMENTS

If you are signed up officially for a U.C. course, you will have a University  computer account. For these assignments you need to know how to use electronic mail, how to do a computer library search in PsychINFO, how to find psychology websites, and how to access my homepage. There will be class time designated to learn these skills. If you need help with computer usage refer to the "Computer Usage" link on the "Course Schedule" page.

4. COURSE EVALUATION

Print the Course Evaluation during the first week of classes, complete it throughout the course, and turn it in during the 10th week of classes. (Required) 

5. IPAT WORKBOOK

Each IPAT Workbook Chapters 5 to 10 will be reviewed periodically. They are to be TOTALLY COMPLETED, and checked IN THE  CLASSROOM ON OR BEFORE THE DUE DATE for credit. You must be present for the entire class period for credit. Complete each chapter exercise, even if your IPAT workbook says you can skip it. BOOKS LEFT IN MY MAILBOX will not be accepted. CHAPTERS WILL NOT BE CHECKED LATE. (30 pts.) (Required: Chapts. 5-9; Choice: Chapt. 10)

7. Progress Reports/Contact Requirement

Keep in contact with your professor when absent from scheduled class meetings. You are required to send your professor an e-mail or a telephone voice mail explanation immediately after two consecutive days absent (before the third day). Note: I recommend and you should consider withdrawal  with  a "W" for the course for  excessive absence (regardless of the reasons), being behind more than two assignments,  or more missed contacts under the circumstances described above. 

8. DEADLINE POINTS

You will receive 5 points for specific required assignments turned in by the deadline. These points represent 15% of your course grade.  See the "Assignment Checklist" for specifics. (60 pts.)

9. TESTS

You will have two tests this quarter (60 pts. total). Questions may be asked from lectures, videos, activities, etc.. There is no Final Exam.

Test 1 (20 pts.) will be entirely multiple-choice and short answer. (Required) /  Test 2  Multiple-choice (30 pts.) ; IPAT Workbook -- Essay (Choice)

IPAT Workbook Essay:

Write a detailed, step-by-step description of the process depicted in one IPAT workbook chapter (from Chapters 5-9) that you found the most helpful. Identify the chapter by title. Use and explain all the terms from the chapter in your own words, as if you are explaining them to someone who knows nothing about stress management.)

Grades: Grades are based on the following scale:

Note:  You must complete all of the tests and all of the Stress Management Program sections (SMP1 & SMP2) to be eligible to receive an "A," "B," or "C," regardless of the total number of points earned.  All work must be completed by the announced deadline day during final exam week or the grade will be calculated on the basis of the points earned up to that time. No "IP"s (incompletes) are generally given.

Grade Scale**: 

A = 320-288  Must complete all of the tests, Stress Management Program sections, and other assignments with an average between 90% or above.

B =227-256  Must complete all of the tests, Stress Management Program sections, and other assignments with an average between 80% and 89%..

C = 255-224 Must complete all of the tests, Stress Management Program sections, and other assignments with an average between 70% and 79%.

 D = 223-192 Work on the the tests, Stress Management Program sections, and other assignments must average between 60% and 69%.

 F =Below 192 Work on the tests, Stress Management Program sections, and other assignments average below 60%.

**Pluses (+) and minuses (-) will be assigned.

Policies

You may turn in any assignment earlier than the due date. ANY ASSIGNMENT TURNED IN LATE WILL RESULT IN A point deduction.  Some assignments will have points deducted  for EACH "CLASS DAY" LATE and WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED FOR CREDIT more than two "class days" late.  Other assignments will have a standard 20%-30% point deduction and may be turned on an announced day.

"Lateness" is defined as turning in materials later than the beginning of the scheduled class period. Material submitted in my mailbox or under my office door will not be accepted unless your professor specifies that you do so.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Any physical exercise mentioned is strictly optional. It is recommended that anyone beginning any physical exercise program consult with a physician .
